KECH: Violence once again claimed an innocent life in Balochistan as an armed attack on a civilian household in Malant, Tump, left a young man dead and his father critically injured, highlighting the continuing security challenges confronting communities in the region.
According to reports, the incident took place on September 12 when armed men entered the residence of Tariq, son of Allah Dad, a serving police constable, in the Malant area of Tump tehsil. The attackers reportedly attempted to take his son, Muhammad Tahir, with them. When the family resisted, gunfire erupted, killing Tahir and seriously wounding his father. Tariq was subsequently shifted to Turbat for medical treatment.
The incident has generated competing narratives over the identity and motive of the attackers. PAANK, a so called Baloch rights organisation, described the assailants as a “death squad” allegedly linked to Pakistani security forces and said the family had resisted an attempted enforced disappearance. These allegations remain disputed and would require an impartial investigation to establish responsibility.
The incident is part of the wider pattern of violence involving armed separatist groups operating in Kech. The Malant-Tump area has previously witnessed attacks attributed to the Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), including assaults on security installations. Security incidents involving IEDs, ambushes and attacks on security personnel have also been documented in Kech during 2026.
Whatever the competing claims surrounding the incident, the human cost remains undeniable.
Muhammad Tahir, a young civilian, lost his life, while his father suffered serious injuries. The tragedy once again demonstrates how prolonged violence can penetrate ordinary homes and place families at risk.
For residents of Kech and other parts of Balochistan, recurring attacks have created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. Civilians should not have to live under the threat of armed violence, regardless of the political narrative used to justify it. Every incident involving the killing or disappearance of a civilian deserves a transparent investigation, credible evidence and accountability for those responsible.
The people of Balochistan have repeatedly expressed a desire for peace, stability, economic opportunity and a secure environment for their families. The loss of another young life in Malant underscores the urgent need to protect civilians and prevent violence from becoming a permanent feature of everyday life.
A comprehensive and impartial investigation into the September 12 incident would help establish the facts, identify those responsible and counter competing narratives with verified evidence. Ultimately, lasting peace in Balochistan requires that civilian lives be protected and that violence, regardless of its perpetrator or justification, be rejected.
