Operation Shaban

Balochistan has recently witnessed a disturbing surge in terrorist violence that has tested the resolve of the Pakistani state. A series of brazen attacks by banned terrorist groups, particularly the Baloch Liberation Army and elements of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, has claimed precious lives and targeted critical infrastructure. As confirmed by the DG ISPR Ahmed Sharif, three major terrorist attacks have been witnessed in just four days in Balochistan. The most shocking incident occurred when terrorists launched a coordinated attack on the Mangi Dam police station in Ziarat, resulting in the martyrdom of 27 police personnel in a single brutal attack.

These attacks reflected a dangerous level of coordination between the BLA and TTP, who have increasingly pooled resources and tactics to spread fear and challenge the security situation of Balochistan. Terrorists exploited rugged terrain for hit and run operations, ambushes on convoys, and strikes on public facilities, aiming to undermine the writ of the state. Intelligence reports have also pointed to external backing, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif categorically stating that India is orchestrating much of this terrorism from Afghan soil. The deliberate targeting of security forces and infrastructure was clearly designed to create an atmosphere of insecurity and hinder ongoing development initiatives vital for the province’s future.

Faced with this escalating threat, Pakistan’s civil and military leadership responded with firmness, unity, and precision. After the Mangi Dam attack, the security forces launched a well-coordinated Operation Shaban on July 5, 2026. The Pakistan Army along with Frontier Corps carried out intelligence-based operations, ground offensives, and aerial attacks targeting terrorist hideouts in the mountainous terrain including districts such as Ziarat, Harnai, Khuzdar, Nushki, and areas around Quetta.

Security sources confirm that more than 150 terrorists have been eliminated specifically in Operation Shaban including Intelligence based operation. Substantial caches of sophisticated weapons, ammunition, and equipment have also been recovered from the slain.

Indubitably, the Operation Shaban has proven exceptionally effective as a counter terrorism strategy for several compelling reasons. First, it has significantly degraded the operational capacity of terrorist networks. By eliminating key commanders, fighters, and facilitators in targeted strikes, the operation has disrupted command and control structures and dismantled supply lines that terrorist used to plan and execute attacks.

Second, the large-scale recovery of weapons and ammunition has deprived terrorist groups of the firepower needed to sustain their campaigns. These seizures not only reduce immediate threats but also expose external sponsorship, providing valuable intelligence for future operations and diplomatic efforts.

Third, it also underscores the seamless coordination between military and civilian authorities. Addressing the Provincial Apex Committee meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed the vital importance of robust inter-agency collaboration in counter-terrorism operations. This clearly reflects Pakistan’s resolve to fight terrorism through a resolute and united national front.

Hence, Operation Shaban has delivered a powerful psychological and deterrent effect. It sends an unambiguous message to both domestic terrorists and their foreign handlers that Pakistan possesses the will and capability to hunt them down relentlessly. The operation is already showing early signs of reducing the frequency and boldness of attacks in Balochistan.

Thus, Operation Shaban exemplifies Pakistan’s unyielding commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and the lives of its citizens. Through swift and well-coordinated action, superior tactics, exceptional inter-agency synergy, and resolute leadership, the campaign has achieved remarkable results in dismantling terrorist networks.

As this decisive operation continues with full momentum, it powerfully reaffirms that Operation Shaban, supported by unwavering national resolve and seamless civil-military coordination, serves as the cornerstone of Pakistan’s fight against terrorism.
