A video clip of veteran politician Mushahid Hussain Syed has surfaced in which he claimed that “Pakistan trained Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri at the behest of the CIA.” The claim collapses several distinct actors, networks and phases of the Afghan jihad into a single narrative that the historical record does not substantiate.

Pakistan’s debate over new provinces has entered a new phase in 2026. Calls for administrative restructuring have once again moved to the center of national political discussion, reflecting a growing recognition that Pakistan’s governance structure must evolve with its expanding population, rapidly growing cities and increasingly complex development needs. The case for new provinces rests on a fundamental administrative principle: governance becomes more effective when power, resources and decision-making move closer to the people.

Pakistan carried out targeted airstrikes against identified hideouts of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and affiliated terrorist elements in Afghanistan during the night of September 20–21, striking locations in Kunar and Paktika near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. According to Pakistani security sources, the intelligence-based strikes killed 28 terrorists and injured more than 100 others.

The arrest of retired police surgeon and political commentator Dr. Ayesha Faiz has been quickly reframed by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) and other anti-state accounts as an instance of political persecution and shrinking civic space in Balochistan. That narrative, however, obscures the conduct that preceded the arrest.

On 29 August, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti warned owners of vineyards and other private properties in Mastung that if their land was being used by terrorists, they would be treated as facilitators. He stressed that the government did not want measures that harmed ordinary citizens, particularly because terrorists often exploit civilians as human shields. At the same time, he made clear that the repeated use of private property by terrorists would not be ignored.

In a recent interview, Colin Smith, Coordinator of the UN Security Council’s Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, pointed to the presence of nearly 20 terrorist organizations in Afghanistan, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Al-Qaeda and Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP). His remarks reinforce the findings of the 38th UN Monitoring Team report, which identifies Afghanistan as an enduring security concern for its neighbours and the wider region.

At a recent United Nations Security Council meeting on threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts, China called for the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its Majeed Brigade to be designated under the UN sanctions regime. Beijing also condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pakistan, called for stronger international support for Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts, and warned that terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory continue to pose a serious regional threat.

The latest propaganda video released by Kharji Noor Wali Mehsud, leader of Fitna al Khawarij (FAK), is another attempt to incite violence. By invoking Surah At-Tawbah ayat 9 he seeks to portray attacks against Pakistan's security forces as a religious obligation, giving terrorism the appearance of divine legitimacy. Rather than engaging in a genuine theological discussion, the video deliberately misuses Islam to justify the killing of Muslims. More significantly, it revives the same pattern employed by the Khawarij in early Islamic history, who selectively quoted the Qur'an, and legitimized violence under the guise of religion.

In an interview on Border Talks with Iftikhar Firdaus, Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti addressed some of the most pressing questions surrounding Balochistan. From the province's security situation and governance reforms to development, terrorism, and political consensus, he outlined how the provincial government views both the challenges confronting the province and the strategy needed to address them.
